Tax registration is part of becoming operational. TIN and VAT are different registrations. Confirm current TRA portal guidance rather than an old checklist.
After incorporation, the company files a TIN on the current TRA process. VAT is a separate registration that applies only when the activity and the live threshold require it — not as a default add-on.

On this page: process · complete tax registration.
TRA charges and outcomes stay with the authority. Approvals are not guaranteed.
Newly incorporated companies that need taxpayer identity before licensing, banking or trading.
Using a photocopied checklist from a previous year, or treating TIN as VAT.
Incorporation documents and activity description.
New companies, foreign-owned entities and businesses that have never completed TRA registration.
The company exists but cannot invoice, bank or licence cleanly because taxpayer identity is missing or inconsistent.
A coordinated tax-registration file using current TRA requirements, aligned with the company record.
A Taxpayer Identification Number is the core tax identity for a person or entity in Tanzania. VAT registration is a separate question that depends on current law and the business's circumstances. Confirm both on tra.go.tz and the current TRA taxpayer portal guidance. This page does not publish thresholds or rates.
| Instrument | What it is | When it usually sits | Who decides | What to do next |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TIN | Taxpayer identity for the person or company | After BRELA incorporation, before invoicing, licensing and most bank KYC | TRA, on the live taxpayer process | File the TIN, then keep particulars aligned with BRELA |
| VAT | A separate TRA registration, not an automatic add-on to the TIN | Only when current VAT law and the activity require it | TRA — confirm the live threshold and activity rules; do not copy an old blog figure | Assess VAT after the TIN exists, using current Finance Act and TRA guidance |
Banks typically ask for the company TIN in the corporate account KYC pack. A TIN is not a licence to trade and is not a bank approval.
TIN registration is the commercial name for getting that TRA identity after BRELA. Zatra prepares the tax-registration file, checks whether VAT is a separate later step, and keeps names, addresses and activity aligned with the company record. Confirm live TRA forms before you file. Professional fees are on pricing. What you must supply is on the foreign-investor document checklist.
When it must be identified as a taxpayer for its activities. In practice, operational companies need this in the setup sequence after incorporation.
When current VAT law and the business's circumstances require it. Do not copy a threshold from an old blog post — including older Zatra articles — without re-checking TRA and the Finance Act.
Names, addresses, directors and activity should match. Banks and licence authorities notice conflicts.
Exact lists depend on the entity, ownership and activity. Start with these items, then confirm against the live regulator or bank process.

What filings the calendar must now watch.
Processing time and government fees change. Zatra does not publish a fixed timeline or fee table on this page; those are confirmed from the current authority or institution for the specific file.
Publishing or relying on obsolete VAT thresholds, and mismatching TRA particulars with BRELA.
Zatra does not guarantee authority acceptance, processing time, bank approval, incentive eligibility or that one registration authorises trading. Live regulator, bank and immigration rules govern.
Unstable regulatory facts are checked against the competent Tanzanian authority. Zatra cites the source of record, not a third-party summary.
If a portal, form or fee has changed since this review date, the live government source governs.
Most briefs need three or four pages, not forty-six. Start on the formation spine. Advisory sits after the company exists.
