TIN Registration in Tanzania: What the TRA Number Is

Hands at a payment terminal — a TIN is a tax identity, not a VAT registration
A TIN does not by itself let you charge VAT or open a mineral right. Caption date: 10 September 2026. A photograph is not a filing.
Direct answer

What is a TIN in Tanzania, and what does it not do? A Taxpayer Identification Number is the Tanzania Revenue Authority identity for a person — company, branch or individual — under the tax-administration framework TRA actually administers. It is not a VAT registration, not a BRELA certificate, not a business licence, and not a TISEZA paper. Banks, Immigration and sector boards will ask for it. VAT, PAYE and other heads register on the TIN when the live Act requires them. Confirm tra.go.tz. This page reprints no application fee.

This page is the TIN identity file. It is not the VAT-threshold walkthrough, not a TIN-and-VAT services landing, and not a payroll-rates table.

Law is stated as at 10 September 2026. Confirm TRA’s live TIN form. Zanzibar tax identity is a ZRA file, not this Mainland TIN.

A company without a TIN cannot finish a bank pack, a TISEZA file, or a Mining Commission application in ordinary practice. A TIN without a matching BRELA name is how TRA queries start. Spell the person the same way on both.

Who must have one

Anyone TRA treats as a taxpayer — including a company that has just been incorporated, a registered foreign branch, and individuals who meet the live obligation. Directors often already hold personal TINs; the company still needs its own. Do not reuse a director’s TIN as the company’s. A non-resident who becomes liable under the Income Tax Act still needs the identity TRA will use on the assessment.

This page does not freeze a “days from incorporation” clock. TRA’s live practice is to want the TIN before the company trades. Treat that as the operating rule until the portal says otherwise.

Sequence

  1. Form or identify the person at BRELA (or BPRA if this is actually Zanzibar — stop and change desks).
  2. Apply for the TIN in the name that BRELA printed.
  3. Match directors, address and ownership to the BRELA extract.
  4. Then decide VAT, PAYE, SDL and WCF against the live Acts — those are the VAT and tax-rates siblings.
  5. Take the TIN certificate into the bank pack. Do not invent a VAT number to look complete.

Worked path: the investor who treated TIN as VAT

A new company prints invoices with “VAT inclusive” because it has a TIN. It is not VAT-registered. Those invoices are a problem, not a rounding difference. Register for VAT only when the live VAT Act requires it, then issue VAT invoices. The sibling VAT page is that file.

A different stall: two TINs for one company after a name change. Tell TRA the BRELA change. Do not let a bank KYC hold the old number.

What TRA will match — and what a director’s TIN cannot do

The company’s TIN is a different person from the director’s personal TIN. Banks, Mining Commission applications and Immigration packs want the company’s number for the company. Reusing a founder’s personal TIN as the company’s file is how two assessments start. Spell the legal name the same way BRELA printed it, including “Limited” and any comma the extract actually has. Confirm tra.go.tz. This page reprints no “days from incorporation” clock.

A registered foreign branch needs its own TIN as the person TRA will assess. A non-resident who becomes liable under the Income Tax Act still needs the identity TRA will use. Operating practice is: get the TIN before you trade. A name reservation is not a person. A trading style that is not on the extract is not a person. Change the extract first if the style is the real name you will invoice in.

Zanzibar tax identity is a ZRA file. A Mainland TIN does not run Unguja VAT. If the workplace is the island, change desks before you photocopy a TRA printout. Split operations still mean two tax identities unless a live instrument you can print says otherwise.

Heads that sit on the TIN later

VAT is a separate registration when the VAT Act requires it — that walkthrough is the VAT sibling. PAYE, SDL and WCF are other heads on the rates keeper. None of them is automatic with the TIN. A TISEZA incentive list is not a TIN. A business licence is not a TIN. A mining licence is not a TIN — the Commission will still ask for the company’s tax identity.

Failure modes already in the TRA queue

Board minutes should name the person, the extract date, and that no fee is guessed. Confirm the live TRA card the week you file. Professional fees stay on /pricing/. Approvals are not guaranteed. As at 11 September 2026, the TIN is identity, not a licence stack.

Group, branch and the TIN that must not be reused

A HoldCo TIN is not the subsidiary’s TIN. A branch TIN is not the foreign parent’s number. A director’s personal TIN is not the company’s. TRA assesses the person on the extract. If you invoice in a name TRA does not know, you have started a second file. Change BRELA first, then TRA, then the bank.

Director or registered-office changes belong on the extract before you reprint the TIN certificate for a bank. A struck-off company that still uses the old TIN is how assessments follow a person that no longer answers mail — close or restore at BRELA, then talk to TRA. VAT, PAYE and SDL still sit on later heads. This page stays identity.

Zanzibar remains ZRA. Confirm tra.go.tz for the Mainland card. As at 11 September 2026, one legal person still gets one company TIN, and it still is not a licence.

What to print for a bank, a board and a sector portal

Print the company’s TIN in the company’s exact BRELA name. Do not print a director’s personal TIN onto a corporate bank pack. Do not print a HoldCo TIN onto a subsidiary Mining Commission form. Do not print a Mainland TIN onto a ZRA file. If the extract changed last week, reprint after TRA has the new name — not from last year’s PDF.

VAT, PAYE and SDL still need their own registrations when the Acts require them. The TIN is only the identity those heads sit on. Confirm tra.go.tz. As at 11 September 2026, the printout still has to name the same person as the extract.
