Residence Permits in Tanzania: The Immigration Stay, Not the Work Permit

This page is the Immigration residence file: who may stay, on which class, after or beside the Labour work permit. It is not the work-permit class walkthrough, not the Zanzibar permit page, and not a visitor-visa blog.

Stay versus work versus visit

Employers who put a founder on a visitor visa “until the permit comes” are in the same file as the founder. Banks and landlords increasingly ask for the residence permit, not the work-permit printout alone. Carry both when both exist.

Dependants are a class, not a courtesy

A spouse or child does not automatically inherit the principal’s right to work. Confirm the live dependant instrument. School and bank onboarding will ask for it. Do not send a dependant to start a job on the principal’s Class B story.

Sequence for an investor who will actually live here

1. Decide whether the person will work. If yes, start the Labour work-permit file — the sibling page.
2. Prepare the Immigration residence pack the live class names (company, TIN, work permit where required, passport bio data).
3. Do not treat a TISEZA certificate as the residence class.
4. If the person will live in Zanzibar, stop. Open the Zanzibar sibling.
5. Renew before expiry. Overstay is an Immigration file, not a calendar mishap.

Class letters are Immigration’s, and they move

Older briefing notes treat Class A as investors and the self-employed, Class B as employees, Class C as other residents. Immigration has digitised. If the live portal uses different letters or names, the portal wins. Do not write “Class A” into a 2026 board minute from a 2019 TIC brochure. Confirm immigration.go.tz and the live e-services host. Residence Class A language, where it still appears, is stay. It is not a Labour work permit. A founder who collects an investor residence class and starts managing the plant without the live Labour class is the failure mode on the investor work-permit page. The former Class A chip URL now 301s here so we do not keep a third page that merges stay and work again.

A TISEZA immigrant quota is a facilitation sentence in the investment Act. It does not print a residence card. A BRELA extract does not print a residence card. A work permit does not, by itself, print stay. Carry both instruments when both exist. Landlords and banks now ask for the residence instrument, not the work-permit printout alone.

What Immigration will match on the pack

Passport bio-data, the employer or investor story, the Labour class where the person will work, and names that match BRELA and TRA. A TISEZA certificate is an overlay, not an attachment that replaces those. Changing employer, changing the company that holds the shares, or moving the workplace to Zanzibar is a new story, not a pen-and-ink edit on last year’s card.

Overstay is an Immigration file. A calendar mishap is not a defence you should plan for. Renew before expiry. Work and residence expire on different days. Diary both. A live work class with a lapsed residence is how Friday flights fail — that pairing sits on the Labour-first page as well, because both desks will ask.

Dependants, school and the job they do not inherit

A spouse or child does not automatically inherit the principal’s right to work. Confirm the live dependant instrument. School enrolment and bank onboarding will ask for it. Do not send a dependant to start a job on the principal’s employee story. When the principal’s work ends, the family file is not a separate business — confirm whether the live rules let the family stay, and on what class.

A dependant who “helps in the shop” is working. Immigration and Labour will not care that no salary hits the account. File the correct class or stop the work. This page will not invent a family-business exemption.

Visitor cover is not a bridge

A visitor or business visa gets the person in. It does not let them run payroll, manage a site, or take a kitchen roster while “the residence is pending.” That fact pattern sits on the consequences keeper. This page will not soften it. If they will live here, file stay. If they will work, file Labour first. If they will only visit for meetings, stay on visitor cover and do not pretend it is residence.

Medical and police items belong where the live residence card asks. Do not attach a 2018 embassy list. Do not quote a WhatsApp “Class A fee” as Gazette. Professional fees stay on /pricing/. Approvals are not guaranteed. As at 11 September 2026, print the live class names before you brief a board.

Address, employer and marital status mid-stay

Immigration issued stay against a story. Changing the registered office, the employer, the company that holds the shares, or the family composition mid-stay is a live-instrument question. Do not wait for the airport to discover the story moved. Confirm immigration.go.tz for the variation or new-file card. This page reprints no “notify within n days” figure.

Landlords and banks will ask for the residence instrument plus the passport. Some will also ask for the work class if the person is employed. Carry what exists. A TISEZA certificate in the folder does not replace stay. A Class A label from a 2019 brochure does not replace the live portal name. If the principal’s work ends, ask Immigration what happens to the family file before you book school for the next term. If the person will now live in Unguja, the Mainland card is the wrong paper. As at 11 September 2026, stay still has to match the address you will give a landlord.

What to carry at the airport and what to leave in the folder

Carry the passport, the residence instrument, and the work class if you work. Leave the TISEZA brochure in the folder. Leave the 2019 Class A PDF in the folder. Leave a visitor visa in the folder if stay has issued — it is not the stay paper. If stay has not issued, do not invent a “pending” stamp at the desk. School and bank onboarding will copy the residence instrument. A work-permit PDF alone is the wrong copy for a landlord who asked for stay. Dependants need their own paper. As at 11 September 2026, carry stay, then work, in that order at the airport if both exist.
