A coffee-farm photograph does not belong on this file. Neither does a cashew-harvest hero stolen from the RCN guide. Kernels are a factory and packing story. If a seller quotes you an RCN auction price as if it were kernels, they are selling the wrong crop.
Grade before payment: what the contract has to say
Write the count (W320, W240, W180), the colour (white wholes versus scorched), the broken-grade if any, maximum moisture, packing (vacuum tin, carton, liner), crop year, and the inspection event. “Premium Tanzanian cashews” is not a spec. AFI-style counts are commercial. They are not gazetted. If you need a named independent inspector (SGS, Intertek, or as you appoint) at the seller’s warehouse before payment, write that. Collection after payment without a cut test is how grade substitution walks out the door.
The RCN guide’s outturn arithmetic, about 22 per cent kernel from a tonne of raw nut, explains why kernel prices sit near five times RCN and still leave a thin processor margin. That arithmetic is not repeated here. It is why a cheap kernel quote is often a broken-grade quote, or a quote that will not ship.
Documents that actually travel with kernels
- Seller identity: BRELA extract and the Board class the live register names for that processor or exporter.
- Commercial invoice naming the grade as the contract named it, not “cashew mixed.”
- Packing list and weight notes that match the cartons you will collect.
- Phytosanitary certificate and any TBS or destination standard the live export path names.
- Certificate of origin if the letter of credit or the destination requires it.
- TRA export declaration on TANCIS when you are the exporter of record. If the processor exports and you buy CIF, their declaration is not your import file in Rotterdam.
Payment in full against a WhatsApp photo of a bowl is not a control. If you must pay before shipment, use a document set a bank will recognise, or an inspection certificate you appointed. Destination KYC will ask where the kernels were processed. “Tanzania” is not a plant.
Worked path: the buyer who thought TMX sold kernels
A European wholesaler asks a Dar desk to “bid cashew at the auction” and wants W320 cartons in Hamburg eight weeks later. TMX sells raw nuts in 80 kg bags, not kernels. Shelling, grading and packing are a processor’s plant. Either you buy RCN and contract a plant, the RCN guide’s arithmetic applies, or you buy kernels from a plant that already exists. Do not lodge a bid-security deposit for a kernel order. Do not tell a bank the Board buying licence is the kernel spec.
