VISAS

(Entry Authorization – Short-Term Stay)

Do I need a visa to enter Tanzania or Zanzibar?

Yes. Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter the United Republic of Tanzania, which legally includes:

  • Mainland Tanzania

  • Zanzibar

Visa-exempt nationalities exist (primarily some African and regional states), but the majority of foreign investors and professionals require:

  • eVisa (recommended)

  • Visa issued by a Tanzanian Embassy/High Commission

  • Visa on Arrival (available in limited cases and subject to discretion)

⚠ Important: The same visa is valid for both Mainland and Zanzibar. Zanzibar is not a separate immigration jurisdiction for entry purposes.

Types of Visas Available

Tourist Visa

  • Single or multiple entry

  • Typically valid for up to 90 days per visit

  • Does NOT allow employment

Business Visa

  • For short-term business activities:

    • Meetings

    • Contract negotiations

    • Trade fairs

    • Professional assignments (non-employment)

  • Usually valid for up to 90 days

  • Does NOT authorize employment or salary in Tanzania

Multiple-Entry Visa

  • Valid up to 12 months

  • Each stay typically limited to 90 days per entry

  • Suitable for frequent investors and board members

  • Does NOT authorize employment

Transit Visa

  • For travelers passing through Tanzania

  • Valid for short stay (typically 7 days)

Student Visa

  • Issued for study programs and internships

  • Valid according to academic duration

Volunteer / Research Visa

  • Typically linked to institutional sponsorship

  • Often aligned with Residence Permit Class C

Visa on Arrival vs eVisa

Visa on Arrival

  • Issued at entry ports

  • May involve queues

  • Approval at immigration officer discretion

eVisa (Strongly Recommended)

  • Applied online before travel

  • Processing: typically 1–7 business days

  • Faster immigration clearance upon arrival

  • Reduces entry uncertainty

Zanzibar Entry Clarification

  • Standard Tanzania visa covers Zanzibar.

  • Zanzibar may require mandatory inbound travel insurance purchased separately.

  • Work and residence permits for Zanzibar investments often involve ZIPA coordination.

Can I extend my visa?

Yes — through the Immigration Department before expiry.

However:

  • Extensions are discretionary.

  • Additional fees apply.

  • Overstaying leads to fines and possible deportation.

WORK PERMITS

(Employment Authorization – Mandatory for Paid Work)

Is a work permit required?

Yes.

Any foreign national engaging in paid employment or income-generating activity must obtain:

·      Work Permit (Ministry of Labour)

·      Residence Permit (Immigration Department)

Both are required.

A visa alone is insufficient.

Who applies?

The Tanzanian employer submits the work permit application via:

👉 Online Work Permit Application & Issuance System (OWAIS)

Foreign nationals cannot self-apply for Class B employment permits.

Main Classes of Work Permits

Class A – Investors / Self-Employed

For:

  • Shareholders

  • Company directors

  • Business owners

Often long-term and renewable.

Class B – Skilled Professionals

For:

  • Expatriate employees

  • Technical specialists

  • Executives

Employer must justify lack of local expertise.

Class C – Specific/Temporary Roles

For:

  • Researchers

  • Volunteers

  • NGOs

  • Project-based experts

Class D – Religious/Charitable Roles

Can I start working before approval?

No.

Employment must not commence until:

·      Work Permit is issued

·      Residence Permit is granted

Non-compliance exposes both employer and employee to penalties.

Standard Work Permit Checklist (Official Structure)

Incomplete submissions delay approvals significantly.

Can a work permit be transferred?

No.

Work permits are:

  • Employer-specific

  • Non-transferable

Changing employer requires a fresh application.

RESIDENCE PERMITS

(Legal Long-Term Stay Authorization)

What is a residence permit?

A residence permit allows a foreign national to legally reside in Tanzania for:

  • Employment

  • Investment

  • Study

  • Research

  • Retirement

  • Religious or charitable work

⚠ It does NOT automatically grant employment rights.Employment requires both work + residence permits.

Who must apply?

Anyone staying:

  • More than 90 days

  • For employment or business purposes

  • For long-term investment activity

Main Classes of Residence Permits

Class A – Investors / Self-Employed

Tanzania actively enforces expatriate compliance.

Final Advisory for Investors

If you are:

  • Visiting frequently → Multiple-Entry Visa

  • Attending short meetings → Business Visa

  • Operating a company → Class A Work + Residence Permit

  • Hiring expatriates → Class B Work + Residence Permit

There is no legal scenario where a foreigner may work in Tanzania without both a valid work permit and a residence permit.
