Halal Meat and Nile Perch Export from East Africa: Separate Licences, Not One Chain

Meat: abattoir, veterinary, halal — three papers

An export of frozen or chilled meat from Tanzania is not “we have a company.” The animal is slaughtered in a plant the veterinary competent authority recognises. The consignment carries the health mark that authority issues. Halal is a separate certification the buyer’s market names — a mosque letter in a WhatsApp group is not that paper. Confirm the live veterinary export card and the live halal body the destination lists. This page names no fee and no working-day count.

Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia run their own veterinary and halal stacks. A Tanzanian veterinary certificate does not clear Mombasa as if it were Dar. An Ethiopian or Kenyan plant that is not on the importing country’s list is not “East African protein.” Name the country of slaughter, the plant, and the destination SPS rule. Do not invent a regional mega-licence.

Nile perch: fisheries, not a butcher’s licence

Nile perch from Lake Victoria is a fisheries product. The processor and the landing site have to sit on the list the competent authority publishes. An export health certificate for fish is not a meat veterinary stamp with the species line changed. Confirm the live fisheries export instrument in the country of processing — Tanzania, Uganda or Kenya, depending on where the fish is packed. Ethiopia is not a Lake Victoria riparian; do not paste Nile perch onto an Ethiopian meat story because a slide said “protein.”

EU, Gulf and other destination lists change. A plant that was listed in 2023 can be delisted. Print the live list the week of the booking. This page will not freeze a buyer country or a residue limit.

Standards, customs and the story that must match

TBS (or the live standards body), TRA customs, and the destination’s SPS desk will copy names. The exporter on the health certificate, the exporter on the invoice, and the company on the registry extract have to be the same legal person unless the live rules allow an agent and that agent is named. A trading company in Dar invoicing fish packed in Entebbe is how the file dies at the border, not at the factory.

Halal on fish is a destination question, not an automatic overlay. Some Gulf buyers want it; some fisheries certificates do not include it. Ask the buyer’s spec. Do not print “halal Nile perch” as if Tanzania issued a combined protein class.
