Business Taxes in Tanzania: A Plain-Language Breakdown
What taxes does a business in Tanzania typically pay? Businesses in Tanzania typically pay corporate income tax, VAT (where applicable), and PAYE if they have employees, all administered by TRA. Which taxes apply depends on business size, structure, and activity — a newly registered small company may have different obligations than a larger VAT-registered one. Confirm live rates and thresholds on TRA; this page does not quote figures that go stale.

This page is for a first-time founder who searched “what are the tax for business in tanzania dar es salaam” and wants a map, not a Finance Act. It uses ordinary words. It does not quote rates, thresholds or penalty percentages — those change, and a wrong number on a ranking page is worse than no number. Open TRA for the live schedule.
Dar es Salaam is not a separate tax country. Mainland Tanzania tax is TRA’s. Zanzibar has its own tax administration for activity on the islands. If you will operate in both, treat them as two files.
The main business taxes, explained simply
Corporate income tax
If you operate through a company, the company is generally taxed on its taxable profit under the income tax rules in force. “Profit” here is a tax idea, not just the number in your head: some expenses are allowed, some are not, and the return has to follow the current Act. Sole proprietors and partnerships are taxed differently from companies. The structure you chose at BRELA is therefore a tax fact, not only a legal one.
This is not the same as VAT, and not the same as PAYE. A company can owe income tax with no employees and no VAT. It can also be VAT-registered and still have an income-tax return. Do not collapse three heads into one WhatsApp question.
VAT (value added tax)
VAT is a tax on taxable supplies, with input tax credits where the law allows, for persons who are required or who choose (where allowed) to register. Whether you must register depends on the current threshold and on the nature of the supplies — not on whether VAT “looks serious.” If you are under the threshold and not required, registering anyway creates returns you must then file. If you are over the threshold and ignore it, that is a different problem.
Invoices, EFD / fiscalisation rules where they apply, and return calendars are part of VAT. Confirm the live machinery on TRA. A longer investor-oriented VAT walkthrough sits at VAT in Tanzania; this page stays at the “do I even have this tax?” level.
PAYE and employment taxes
If you have employees, you generally withhold PAYE and meet other statutory employment deductions the current law lists (skills development and social security schemes are often in the same conversation, even when they are not all TRA). The label “consultant” on a contract does not decide this — the facts of the relationship do. See payroll compliance when people are about to start.
Other heads you may meet
Depending on activity: withholding on certain payments, excise, customs and import duties at the border, stamp duties, and local government levies or licences that are not TRA at all. A mining, financial-services or import file is not a shop. Name the activity before anyone lists “all the taxes.”
Which taxes apply to which size or type of business
A useful way to think, not a legal test:
- Just incorporated, no staff, no taxable supplies yet. You still need the tax identity (TIN) and you still have a corporate tax file once you have a company. VAT and PAYE may not apply yet.
- Trading below VAT threshold, with or without a few staff. Income tax plus PAYE if there are employees. VAT only if the live rules require it.
- VAT-registered trader or importer. Income tax, VAT, customs where goods cross a border, PAYE if staff exist.
- Foreign-owned or regulated sector. The same heads, plus investment registration, sector levies and often more TRA correspondence. Do not copy a small shop’s calendar.
Branch vs company vs business name changes who is the taxpayer. Confirm the vehicle first: company registration steps.
Filing deadlines and what happens if you miss one
Each head has a calendar. Missing a return is how penalties and interest start, and how a “small” company becomes a TRA correspondence file. This page will not invent the due dates — they are on TRA and they move with the year. Put the calendar in writing when you register, and put a person in charge of it. That person can be you or a tax consultant.
If you already missed a deadline, do not ignore the notice. Late filing plus silence is worse than late filing plus a response. Dispute and audit work is a different desk: TRA audit and dispute.
Where to get help
Read TRA first. Then, if the file has more than one head, a foreign owner, staff, or a notice, use a named consultant with fee-separated quotes. Planning questions that are about structure rather than a form belong in what’s legal vs risky — and still end in a consultation, not in a blog comment.
Verify before you file
Rates, thresholds, EFD rules and due dates change. Confirm on the TRA portal and the current Tax Acts. Do not use this page as a computation.
Frequently asked questions
Do small businesses in Tanzania need to register for VAT?
Only if the live TRA rules require it — typically a turnover threshold and/or the nature of the supplies. Small is not a legal exemption by itself. Confirm the current threshold on TRA rather than on this page.
What happens if a business misses a TRA filing deadline?
Penalties and interest can apply, and the file can attract correspondence or enforcement. The exact amounts follow the law in force. File as soon as you can and do not ignore notices. A consultant can help with the response; they cannot unwind a missed deadline by magic.
Is Dar es Salaam taxed differently from the rest of Tanzania?
No separate mainland tax code for the city. TRA administers mainland taxes. Local licences and levies may still apply in Dar es Salaam. Zanzibar is a different tax administration if you operate there.
